برفی نباریده بود، دمای هوا ۲۰ درجه و معتدل بود، برخی حیاط‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ها و همچنین درختان نخل اطراف بوته‌زارها سبز بودند، با این حال مشخص بود که شب کریسمس است. روی در خانه‌های حاشیه‌ی خیابان، حلقه‌های گل آویزان بود که بعضی از آنها چراغانی شده بودند. بسیاری از پنجره‌ها با نورهای قرمز، سبز و آبی تزئین شده بودند. درخشش نور درخت‌های کریسمس از برخی از پنجره‌ها نمایان بود. البته همزمان صدای موسیقی‌های آشنای قدیمی، کریسمس سفید، آوه ماریا و شب آرام از بعضی از خانه‌ها شنیده می‌شد.

همه‌ی اینها خوب بود، زیرا کریسمس در شهری از فلوریدا مانندکریسمس در هر جای دیگر، اوقاتی خوش و لذت بخش بود. حتی اگر پلیس باشی. حتی اگر سرکار باشی و نتوانی شب کریسمس را در کنار همسر و فرزندانت در منزل سپری کنی. اما لزوماً اوقات خوشی نیست اگر پلیسی باشی که به همراه چهار نفر دیگر سرِ پست است و مجبورید مجرمی فراری را دستگیر کنید و به زندان برگرداندید، یا به احتمال زیاد مجبور به کشتنش شوید، چون محکوم به حبس ابد است و خودش را معرفی نکرده است.

 مک‌کی[۲]، کارآگاه درجه سه‌ای که فقط چندماهی می‌شد وارد این کار شده بود، همراه من در ماشین بود. جوانی چشم روشن و شاداب بود. یک جوان آمریکایی تمام عیار که در کارش جدیت زیادی داشت. درستش هم همین بود. همان طوری بود که باید باشد. حدود چهار خانه پایین‌تر از خانه‌ی اجاره‌ای که خانم بوگن[۳] و سه فرزندش در آن زندگی می‌کردند پارک کرده بودیم.

درست در همین فاصله از آن سمت خانه، خودرویی بود که ستوان مورتل[۴] و ترشر[۵]، کارگاه درجه یک، در آن نشسته بودند. مورتل مردی بد‌ دهان، به باریکی سوزن و میانسال بود که خصایص انسانی اندکی در نگاهش وجود داشت. او فرمانده بود. ترشر فردی معمولی و تپل بود، یک پلیس معمولی.

در خیابان پشتی خانه‌ی بوگن ماشین دیگری از اداره‌ی پلیس پارک بود که دو کارآگاه درجه اول به نام‌های دودی[۶] و فیشمن[۷] در آن بودند. آنها آن پشت بودند تا مبادا ارل بوگن[۸] از ما دور شود و از طریق حیاط‌ها به ساختمان دیگر برود. بعید می‌دانستم این کار را بکند.

پس از مدتی مک‌کی گفت: «نمی‌دانم در مناطق شمالی برف می‌بارد یا نه. شرط می‌بندم که آنجا حسابی دارد برف می‌آید» جایش را تغییری داد و گفت: «اصلاً به نظر نمی‌رسد که کریسمس باشد. کریسمس با نخل‌های خرما، چه خبر است!»

یادش انداختم که «اولین کریسمس هم همینطور بود.»

فکر کرد و پاسخ داد: «بله. بله. درست است. اما با این حال دوستش ندارم.»

می‌خواستم بپرسم چرا برای زندگی به جنوب کشور که هوا گرم است آمده است، بعد یاد مادرش افتادم که به این آب و هوا برای زنده ماندن احتیاج داشت.

سپس مک‌کی گفت: «می‌دانی گروهبان، داشتم فکر می‌کردم که این یارو، بوگن، باید دیوانه باشد.»

«چون انسان است و می‌خواهد همسر و فرزندانش را در کریسمس ملاقات کند؟»

«خوب، باید این را بداند که اگر بد بیاورد دستگیر می‌شود. این برای همسر و فرزندانش بدتر خواهد شد. درست است؟ چرا این لعنتی فقط برایشان هدایا و از این چیزها نفرستاده است تا بعداً با آنها تلفنی صحبت کند؟ ها؟»

«مک‌کی، ازدواج نکردی، درسته؟»

«نه.»

«و فرزندی هم نداری. بنابراین نمی‌توانم سوالت را پاسخ دهم.»

«من هنوز معتقدم که او یک دیوانه است.»

پاسخی ندادم. به این فکر می‌کردم که چطور می‌توانم حال جاسوس نفرت انگیزی را بگیرم که به ما گفته بود چند سالی‌ست ارل بوگن در شب‌های کریسمس به خانه‌اش سر می‌زند، بدون آنکه گیر بیفتد. او یک موش واقعی در فهرست من بود که توانایی انجام همچین کار وحشتناکی را داشت. اگر باعث دردسرم می‌شد، حسابش را می‌رسیدم.

سپس به فکر حرف‌هایی که یک ساعت پیش ستوان مورتل زده بود افتادم. گفت: «تیم[۹]، به نظر من تو پلیس خوبی نیستی. بیش از حد احساساتی هستی. باید از حالا به بعد بدانی که یک پلیس نباید احساساتی باشد. آیا وقتی بوگن داشت جانِ مدیر شرکت مالی را می‌گرفت احساساتی شد؟ آیا نگران همسر و فرزندان او بود؟ دست از حماقت بردار. باشه تیم؟»

این پاسخی بود که در جواب پیشنهادم شنیدم؛ گفته بودم که اجازه بدهیم ارل بوگن وارد منزل شود، خانواده‌اش را ببیند، کریسمس را جشن بگیرند و هنگام خروج از خانه دستگیرش کنیم. گفته بودم اگر فرصتی به او بدهیم مگر چه چیزی را از دست می‌دهیم. البته، می‌دانستم که مورتل هیچ بخشی از پیشنهادم را نمی‌پذیرد، با این حال باید هر طور شده تلاشم را می‌کردم. اگرچه می‌دانستم که ستوان هم به همان چیزی فکر می‌کرد که من فکر کردم- اینکه سختی دستگیری بوگن هنگام خروج دو برابر بود.

صدای کم سن و سال و خسته‌ای افکارم را بر هم زد: «به نظرت واقعاً مسلح است؟ منظورم بوگن است.»

«آره، فکر کنم.»

«خوشحالم که مورتل گفت اگر حتی کوچکترین حرکتی کرد که به نظر آمد سراغ چیزی می‌رود امانش ندهیم و حسابش را یکسره کنیم. مورتل، پلیس قدیمی و باهوشی‌ست.»

«درست است، همین را گفت، اما اصلاً چشمانش را دیدی؟»

مک‌کی گفت: «مگر چشمانش چه مشکلی داشت؟»

گفتم: «بگذریم، اتوبوس آمد.»

می‌دانستیم که ارل بوگن ماشینی نداشت؛ مطمئن نبودیم که ماشین کرایه می‌کند یا تاکسی می‌گیرد. پول کافی نداشت. اتوبوس شهری از شهر آمد و در گوشه‌ای ایستاد. به احتمال زیاد با اتوبوس می‌آمد. اما در این یکی نبود. زنی تنها پیاده شد و به سمت خیابان اصلی راهش را پیش گرفت. آهی کشیدم و به صفحه‌ی شب‌تابِ ساعتم نگاهی انداختم: ده و پانزده دقیقه. یک ساعت و ده دقیقه‌ی دیگر خلاص می‌شدیم؛ چه می‌شد اگر آمدنش در گشت ما اتفاق نمی‌افتاد. امیدوار بودم که اینطور باشد. ممکن بود. شاید جاسوس در مورد همه چیز اشتباه کرده باشد، یا احتمال داشت اتفاقی باعث ایجاد تغییر در برنامه‌های بوگن شده باشد، یا دست‌کم آمدنش را به سال بعد موکول کرده باشد. تکیه دادم و منتظر اتوبوس بعدی ماندم.

مک‌کی گفت: «گروهبان، تا به حال کسی را کشته‌ای؟»

پاسخ دادم: «نه، هرگز مجبور به این کار نشده‌ام. اما زمانی که شخص دیگری این کار را کرد آنجا بودم.»

«واقعاً؟ چه حسی داشت؟» در صدای مک‌کی هیجان موج می‌زد. «منظورم کسی‌ست که شلیک کرد. چه حسی داشت؟»

«نمی‌دانم. نپرسیدم. اما برایت می‌گویم چطور به نظر می‌رسید. طوری که انگار می‌خواست بالا بیاورد، انگار باید این‌ کار را می‌کرد، اما نمی‌توانست.»

مک‌کی گفت: «آه.» نا‌امید به نظر می‌رسید.

«شخصی که مورد اصابت گلوله قرار گرفته بود، چطور؟ چه می‌کرد؟ تا حالا کسی را که مورد اصابت گلوله قرار گرفته باشد ندیدم.»

گفتم: «او، فریاد می‌زد.»

«فریاد می‌زد؟»

«آره. تا به حال فریاد کودکی را که انگشتانش میان در مانده باشد شنیده‌ای؟ همان شکلی فریاد می‌کشید. به کشاله‌ی رانش شلیک شده بود.»

«عجب، متوجهم.» اما آن‌طور که به نظر می‌رسید نبود. به نظرم مک‌کی همان پلیسی بود که آنها خوب می‌دانستند- شخصی خوب، عاقل و کاملاً بی‌عاطفه.

میلیون‌ها بار پیش خودم ‌گفته بودم که باید این کار را کنار بگذارم. نه بعد از گشت امشب، نه بعد از ماه آینده، نه هفته‌ی بعد یا فردا بلکه همین حالا. بهترین هدیه‌ی کریسمسی بود که می‌توانستم به خودم و خانواده‌ام بدهم. و در عین حال می‌دانستم که هرگز این‌ کار را نمی‌کنم. دقیقاً نمی‌دانستم چرا. می‌ترسیدم نتوانم بیرون از اینجا امرار معاش کنم؛ می‌ترسیدم همانند پدرم در سن پیری باری روی دوش دیگران باشم- اینها برخی از دلایلم بود، نه همه‌ی آنها. با این حال اگر بگویم بعد از این همه مدت پلیس بودن این کار بخشی از وجودت می‌شود حتی اگر از آن متنفر باشی دروغ نگفته‌ام. حتی شاید بدتر به نظر برسد اگر بگویم یکی از دلایل تحملم این بود که امیدوار بودم بتوانم کارهای بد بعضی از آدم‌ها را جبران کنم و گاهی کارهای نیک انجام دهم.

مک‌کی گفت: «اگر من به بوگن شلیک کنم، فریاد نمی‌کشد.»

«چرا فریاد نمی‌کشد؟»

«می‌دانم چطور شلیک کنم. در این فاصله‌ی تیررس نزدیک، گلوله‌ای در چشمش خالی می‌کنم.»

گفتم: «می‌دانم که این کار را می‌کنی، البته اگر فرصتش را داشته باشی. آرام دستگیرش می‌کنیم. نمی‌خواهیم در همچین محله‌ای در شب کریسمس شلیکی صورت گیرد.»

سپس نور اتوبوس بعدی را دیدم که در گوشه‌ای متوقف شد. زن و مردی پیاده شدند. زن به سمت خیابان اصلی پیچید. مردی با قد متوسط اما بسیار لاغر با بسته‌هایی روی دوشش خیابان را بالا می‌آمد.

گفتم: «آمد، از ماشین پیاده شو مک‌کی.»

هر دو پیاده شدیم. هر کدام در سمتی. مردی که از کنار خیابان به سمت ما می‌آمد نمی‌توانست ما را ببیند. کاج‌های استرالیایی که کنار پیاده‌رو کاشته بودند، سایه‌ی سنگینی ایجاد کرده بودند.

گفتم: «مک‌کی دستور را می‌دانی. زمانی‌که به او نزدیک شویم، ترشر زودتر به او می‌رسد و اسلحه‌اش را روی کمر بوگن قرار می‌دهد. بعد تو دستانش را می‌گیری و سریع دستبند می‌زنی. من چند قدم عقب‌تر تو را پوشش می‌دهم. مورتل پشت‌ ترشر او را پوشش می‌دهد. متوجه شدی؟»

مک‌کی گفت: «بسیار خوب.»

به راه رفتن ادامه می‌دادیم. ابتدا اندکی شتاب‌زده، اما بعد کمی آهسته‌تر، تا بتوانیم به بوگن که به سمت ما می‌آمد برسیم، درست بعد از آنکه از کنار مورتل و ماشین ترشر بگذرد و قبل از اینکه به خانه‌ای که خانواده‌اش در آن زندگی می‌کردند نزدیک شود.

تنها یک متر مانده بود به بوگن برسیم که به فضای خالی میان درختان رسید و نور باریک ماه که اندکی از میان شاخه‌ی درختان می‌تابید باعث روشنایی آنجا شده بود. بوگن کلاهی بر سر نداشت، فقط کت ورزشی، پیراهن و شلوار راحتی پوشیده بود. حدود شش بسته به همراه داشت که هیچکدام چندان بزرگ نبودند، اما همه‌ی آنها با زرورق‌های رنگی و براق و روبان کادو پیچ شده بودند. برخلاف عکس‌هایی که در اختیار پلیس قرار داشت، بوگن موهای بلندش را کاملاً کوتاه کرده و سیبیل گذاشته بود. با این حال تغییر چندانی در چهره‌اش ایجاد نشده بود.

درست زمانی که ما را دید گام‌هایش آهسته شد. سپس ایستاد. ترشر، در فاصله‌ی بسیار نزدیکی پشت او می‌رفت. صدای کلفت و مبهم ترشر را شنیدم که گفت: «بسته‌ها را بنداز و دستانت را بالا بیاور بوگن. همین حالا!»

بسته‌ها را که انداخت، روی پیاده‌رو کنار پاهایش افتادند و دو تا از آنها باز شدند. در یکی از بسته‌ها ماشین اسباب‌بازی مسابقه‌ای بود. به نظر می‌رسید کمی خراب شده باشد چون وقتی از بسته بیرون آمد، موتور کوچکش صدای غژغژی داد و ماشین کوچک حدود یک متر آن طرف پیاده رو افتاد.

از بسته‌ی دیگر، عروسکی به پشت روی پیاده‌رو افتاد و چشمان درشت و رنگی‌اش به سمت بالا خیره بود. لباسش مانند عروس بود. از بسته‌ی دیگر مایعی روی پیاده‌رو جاری شد و به نظرم آمد که بطری شراب کریسمس بوگن و همسرش است.

اما زمانی‌ که بوگن بسته‌ها را رها کرد، دستانش را بالا نبرد. چرخید و ضربه‌ی آرنجش به صورت ترشر صدای شدیدی ایجاد کرد. سپس صدای درآوردن اسلحه‌ی ترشر را در حال کشیدن ماشه در واکنش به ضربه‌ی بوگن شنیدم. اما جهت شلیک اسلحه‌اش به سمت آسمان بود.

به محض اینکه بوگن دستش را درون کتش برد اسلحه‌ام را بالا بردم، اما اصلاً فرصت پیدا نکردم از آن استفاده کنم. مک‌کی از اسلحه‌اش استفاده کرد. سر بوگن به عقب رفت طوری‌که انگار کسی با کف دست ضربه‌ای زیر چانه‌اش زده باشد. به عقب تلوتلو و پیچ و تاب خورد و افتاد.

با چراغ قوه‌ام به سمت بوگن رفتم. گلوله‌ی اسلحه‌ی مک‌کی به چشم راستش اصابت کرده بود و هیچ چیز دیگری جز سوراخی وحشتناک جای آن نبود. نور چراغ قوه‌ام را لحظه‌ای به صورت مک‌کی انداختم. تحملش را نداشتم. رنگ آن جوان سفید شده بود، اما چشمانش از هیجان برق می‌زد و اصلاً ناخوش به نظر نمی‌رسید. مدام از اضطراب لبانش را خیس می‌کرد و می‌گفت: «مرده. دیگر جای نگرانی نیست. او مرده است.»

چراغ جلوی درب خانه‌های آن اطراف روشن شدند و مردم بیرون می‌آمدند. مورتل بر سرشان فریاد زد: «بروید داخل. چیزی برای دیدن وجود ندارد. به پلیس مربوط است. بروید داخل.»

البته بیشتر آنها داخل نرفتند. آمدند برای تماشا، اگرچه اجازه ندادیم نزدیک جسد شوند. ترشر همه چیز را به اداره‌ی مرکزی مخابره کرد. مورتل به من گفت: «تیم، برو و به همسرش اطلاع بده و بگو باید برای تشخیص هویت نهایی بیاید.»

گفتم: «من؟ چرا مک‌کی را نمی‌فرستید. او حساس نیست. یا چرا شما نمی‌روید؟ به هر حال همه‌ی این بازی ایده‌ی شما بود ستوان، به خاطر دارید؟»

«از دستورم سرپیچی می‌کنی؟»

سپس ایده‌ای به ذهنم رسید و گفتم: «نه، باشد. من می‌روم.»

راهی خانه‌ای شدم که همسر بوگن و فرزندانش در آن زندگی می‌کردند. وقتی همسرش در را باز کرد، پشت سرش اتاق پذیرایی ساده و اسباب اثاثیه‌ی معمولی و ارزان قیمتی به چشم می‌خورد که با وجود درخشش درختی تزئین شده دیگر آنطور به نظر نمی‌رسیدند. هدایایی مرتب و منظم اطراف درخت چیده شده بودند. سوی دیگر، گوشه‌ی اتاق خواب چشمان دختری حدوداً شش ساله و پسری دو ساله را دیدم که حیرت‌زده به من خیره شده بودند.

خانم بوگن دید که من آنجا ایستاده‌ام و کمی وحشت‌زده به نظر می‌رسم. گفت: «بله؟ چه اتفاقی افتاده است؟»

سپس به فکر روزنامه افتادم. فکر کردم «چه فایده‌ای دارد؟ به هر حال این خبر فردا در روزنامه‌ها خواهد بود.» بعد یادم افتاد که روز کریسمس است؛ هیچ روزنامه‌ای فردا منتشر نمی‌‌شود و برخی شاید زحمت روشن کردن رادیو و تلویزیون را به خود دهند.

بنابراین گفتم: «نگران نباشید.» فقط دارم به مردم اطلاع می‌دهم که چه اتفاقی افتاده است. خانم، ما دزدی را در حین دزدی غافلگیر کردیم و او به سمت این خیابان فرار کرد. در اینجا به او رسیدیم و مجبور شدیم شلیک کنیم. اما حالا همه چیز تمام شده است. نمی‌خواهیم کسی از منزل خارج شود و مزاحمتی ایجاد کند، بنابراین لطفاً بروید و بخوابید، باشد؟»

از تعجب دهان و چشمانش گرد شده بودند. با صدایی ملایم و مبهم گفت: «چه کسی- چه کسی بود؟»

گفتم: «شخص مهمی نبود، یک اوباش جوان.»

بعد گفت: «آه» می‌توانستم آسایش خاطری را که در چهره‌اش نمایان بود ببینم و فهمیدم که حدسم درست بوده و بوگن او را از آمدنش مطلع نکرده بود؛ می‌خواست او را غافلگیر کند. در غیر این صورت متوجه می‌شد. به او شب بخیر گفتم و برگشتم و صدای آرام بستن در را پشت سرم شنیدم.

وقتی نزد مورتل رفتم به او گفتم : «بوگن بیچاره. به خاطر هیچ چیز به دام افتاد. خانواده‌اش اصلاً خانه نیستند. از یکی از همسایگانشان پرسیدم و او گفت منزل مادر خانم بوگن رفته‌اند و تا روز بعد از کریسمس برنمی‌گردند.»

مورتل در حالی که مأمورین حمل جسد را می‌نگریست که بوگن را درون جعبه قرار می‌دادند گفت: «پس دخلم در آمد.»

گفتم: «بله». نمی‌دانم زمانی که مورتل متوجه شود چه کار کرده‌ام -که بدون شک بالاخره این اتفاق می‌افتد- چه بلایی سرم می‌آورد. بعدش دیگر برایم مهم نبود. مسئله‌ی مهم این بود که خانم بوگن و آن کودکان کریسمس خود را طبق برنامه پیش می‌بردند. حتی پس فردا که برگردم و به او بگویم که موضوع از چه قرار بوده چیزی از زحماتم کم نمی‌کرد.

شاید کار زیادی برایشان نکرده باشم اما این چیزی بود که اندکی، نه خیلی زیاد، حس خوبی در من ایجاد می‌کرد.
