همه عاشق روز اول مدرسه‌اند، نه؟ سال جدید، کلاس‌های جدید، دوست‌های جدید. روزی سرشار از چیزهای تازه و امید است، پیش از آنکه همه‌ی مسائل افسرده‌کننده‌ی واقعیت خوشی‌مان را از بین ببرد. اما من روز اول مدرسه را به دلیل متفاوتی دوست دارم. می‌دانید، من یک قدرتی دارم. وقتی آدم‌ها را نگاه می‌کنم، می‌توانم یک نوعی هاله را دور آنها ببینم. یک خط رنگی که نشان می‌دهد چقدر دیگر از عمر آنها باقی مانده است. بیشتر هم سن و سالانی که دور و اطرافم می‌بینم هاله‌ی سبز پررنگی دارند که نشان می‌دهد هنوز کلی وقت دارند. در هاله‌ی بعضی از آنها نور زرد-نارنجی‌ای دیده می‌شود که نشان از تصادف ماشین یا وقوع اتفاق تراژیک دیگری دارد، هر اتفاقی که باعث مرگ کسی پیش از تمام شدنِ عمرش شود. وقتی ماجرا جالب می‌شود که هاله‌ی آنها قرمزِ قرمز می‌شوند. گاهی اوقات آدمی را می‌بینم که اساساً مانند یک چراغ قرمز است. آنها کسانی‌اند که یا خودکشی می‌کنند یا به قتل می‌رسند. از آنجایی که می‌دانی تنها مدت کمی از زندگی آنها باقی مانده است، دیدن این جور آدم‌ها بسیار هیجان‌انگیز است. به همین دلیل است که من همیشه زودتر از همه واردِ کلاس می‌شوم تا به تماشای سرنوشت ناامیدکننده‌ی دوستانم بنشینم. اولین بچه‌ای که وارد کلاس شد قرمز قرمز بود. با دهان بسته خندیدم، خیلی بد شد رفیق. اما همین‌طور که بچه‌ها یکی یکی وارد کلاس می‌شدند می‌دیدم که همه‌شان همین‌طور قرمزند. نهایتاً متوجه بازتاب تصویر خودم در پنجره‌ی کلاس شدم، اما خشکم زده بود و نمی‌توانستم از جایم جُم بخورم. استادمان وارد کلاس شد و در را قفل کرد. هاله‌ی او سبز پررنگی بود.
