برندا ان اسپنسر[۱] صبح دوشنبه ۱۹ جولای سال ۱۸۷۹ میلادی از پنجره‌ی خانه‌شان که روبه‌روی مدرسه‌ی ابتدایی کلوند[۲] در سن‌دیگو بود، به بچه‌هایی که منتظر باز شدن در مدرسه بودند شلیک می‌کند. در این حادثه هشت دانش‌آموز مصدوم می‌شوند و مدیر مدرسه، آقای برتون ورگ و سرایدار، آقای مایک ساچر، که تلاش می‌کنند جان بچه‌ها را نجات دهند، کشته می‌شوند. برندا به این سادگی‌ها تسلیم نمی‌شود و پلیس‌ها بعد از هفت ساعت تیراندازی می‌تواند او را زنده دستگیر کند. در این حادثه یک افسر پلیس نیز زخمی می‌شود.

چیزی که این حادثه را خاص کرد، مصاحبه‌ی برندا با یکی از رسانه‌های محلی، درست هنگام درگیری با پلیس بود. او در این مصاحبه از دلیل این کشتار جمعی حرف زد:

«فقط شروع کردم به تیر زدن. همین. واسه لذتش این کارو کردم. از دوشنبه‌ها خوشم نمیاد. این کارو کردم که دوشنبه بهم خوش بگذره. هیشکی از دوشنبه خوشش نمیاد.»

یک دختر ۱۶ ساله برای اینکه از دوشنبه خوشش نمی‌آمده هفت ساعت از پشت پنجره مشغول تیراندازی بوده است. باب گلدوف[۳] از گروه پاپ بوم‌تون رتس[۴] وقتی برای مصاحبه به رادیو رفته بود، در تله‌تکس همین جمله را می‌خواند. ماجرا برای درک‌نشدنی می‌آید. باب می‌گوید پس از خواندن همین جمله‌ی به ظاهر ساده، ناخودآگاه جمله‌ای به ذهنش خطور می‌کند:

«چیپ سیلیکونی مغزش به حالت لبریز درآمد[۵]»

باب این جمله را یادداشت می‌کند و چندی بعد همین جمله به آهنگی تبدیل می‌شود به نام «دوشنبه‌ها را دوست ندارم» و برای مدت زیادی در لیست ۱۰۰ آهنگ برتر آمریکا قرار می‌گیرد. در این آهنگ، باب از چیز خاصی نمی‌گوید. فقط همین ماجرا روایت می‌شود. شخصی از دوشنبه‌ها خوشش نمی‌آمده و بچه‌ها را به گلوله بسته است. هیچ دلیل یا تحلیلی در کار نیست و همه چیز بدون داوری روایت می‌شود. شاید همین هم باعث پرطرفدار شدن این قطعه شده است.

اطلاعات جزئی دیگری نیز از این ماجرا وجود دارد. مثلا برندا مدیر مدرسه‌ی برندا یک سال قبل از حادثه به پدرش گفته است که برندا افسرده است و باید از او مراقبت شود. برندا سال قبلش از پنجره با تفنگ بادی کپسولی به بیرون شلیک کرده است و پس از آن پلیس می‌خواسته او را به بیمارستان روانی بفرستد، اما پدرش قبول نکرده است. همان سال پدرش به عنوان هدیه‌ی کریسمس به برندا یک تفنگ کالیبر ۲۲ می‌دهد که با همان هم به بچه‌ها شلیک کرده است. آن هم در حالی که برندا رادیو می‌خواسته است. او بعدتر گفته بود که «به پدرم گفتم برایم رادیو بخر و او تفنگ خرید. لابد می‌خواسته خودم را بکشم.»

اما این جزئیات همیشه وجود دارند و باب میل تحلیلگران‌اند. چیزی که آهنگ باب را شنیدنی می‌کند بی‌توجهی به همین جزئیات است. این قطعه فقط ماجرا را روایت می‌کند. دختری به بچه‌ها شلیک می‌کند چون از دوشنبه‌ها خوشش نمی‌آید. این آهنگ فقط به ما می‌گوید که در دنیایی زندگی می‌کنیم که دختری شانزده ساله به دلیل ملال‌انگیز بودن دوشنبه‌ها آدم می‌کشد.

برندا هنوز هم در زندان است. او به عنوان بزرگسال محاکمه شد و به ۲۵ سال یا حبس ابد محکوم شد. چند بار تقاضای عفو مشروط کرد اما هربار در کمیته‌ی ارزیابی رد شد. یک بار در سال ۲۰۱۱ به دلیل اینکه روی بدنش کلمه‌های شجاعت و غرور را خالکوبی کرده بود، کمیته به این جمع‌بندی رسید که هنوز متنبه نشده است. آماندا در سال ۲۰۰۱ ادعا کرد که پدرش به او تجاوز می‌کرده است، اما به دلیل اینکه تا پیش از این، چنین چیزی نگفته بود، ادعایش رد شد. گفته می‌شود شاید در سال ۲۰۱۹ و در ۵۷ سالگی آزاد شود.
