داستانی از ادگار آلن پو[۱]

پیش‌خدمتم قصری را برای اقامت آن شب‌مان معامله کرده بود؛ آن هم در شرایطی که احساساتم بیش از حد جریحه‌دار شده‌ بودند و نیاز داشتم تا شبی را در هوای آزاد بگذارنم. ساختمانِ آن قصر آمیخته‌ای از وهم، عظمت و شکوه بود که در برابر رشته‌کوه‌های آپنینی[۲] چهره در هم کشیده بود. در هر حال، به نظر می‌رسید موقتاً و به تازگی تخلیه شده بود. در یکی از کوچکترین و کم‌تجمل‌ترین آپارتمان‌های مبله‌ی آنجا مستقر شدیم که در یکی از دورترین برجک‌های ساختمان قرار داشت. دکوراسیون آنجا در عینِ فاخر بودن، درهم برهم و عتیقه بود. پرده‌ی نگارینی بر دیوار آن آویزان بود که آراسته به غنایم رزمی و تعداد بسیار زیادی نقاشی‌های مدرن در قاب‌های اسلیمی طلایی گران‌قیمت بود. به دلیل معماری عجیب و غریب و مدور ساختمان، نه تنها سطح پشتی‌شان، بلکه گوشه‌های آنها نیز به دیوار متصل بود. شاید به دلیل اینکه خودم هم آن شب حال پریشانی داشتم، به این نقاشی‌ها علاقه‌مند شدم؛ بنابراین به پیش‌خدمتم، پدرو[۳] دستور دادم تا پنجره‌های عظیم اتاق را ببندد، و از آنجایی که شب فرا رسیده بود، به او گفتم تا شمعدانی‌های بلندی را که بالای تختم قرار داشتند روشن کند و روتختی مخمل سیاه روی تخت را کنار بزند. دلم می‌خواست زودتر این کارها را انجام بدهد تا من بتوانم بدون توجه به پریشانی خودم در تخت فرو بروم و حتی اگر خوابم نبرد، دست‌کم به این نقاشی‌ها بنگرم و کتاب کوچکی را مطالعه کنم که درباره‌ی توصیف و نقد این نقاشی‌ها بود و کنار بالشم پیدایش کرده بودم.

مدت بسیار زیادی مطالعه کردم و با دقت نقاشی‌ها را نگرستیم. ساعت‌هایی باشکوه به سرعت از پس هم گذشتند و نیمه شب فرا رسید. جای شمعدان آزرده خاطرم می‌کرد، بنابراین برای آنکه مزاحم پیش‌خدمتم که خوابیده بود نشوم، دستم را به سختی دراز کردم و آن را در جایی قرار دادم تا نور بیشتری بر کتابم بتابد.

اما این کارم اثری غیرقابل پیش‌بینی داشت. پرتوی شمع‌های متعدد (چند شمع در شمعدان قرار داشتند) روی طاقچه‌ای در اتاق افتاد که تا آن لحظه، در یکی از گوشه‌ها در تاریکی فرو رفته بود. بنابراین به ناگهان چشمم به تصویری افتاد که تا آن لحظه متوجهش نشده بودم. پرتره‌ای از دختر جوانی در آستانه‌ی زن شدن بود. به سرعت پس از دیدن آن نقاشی چشمانم را بستم. اول خودم هم متوجه نشدم چرا این کار را کردم. اما در حالی که پلک‌هایم هنوز بسته بودند، در ذهنم به دنبال دلیلی برای بسته نگه داشتن چشمانم گشتم. این کارم، حرکتی بی‌اختیار در جهتِ به دست آوردن فرصتی برای فکر کردن، اطمینان حاصل کردن از اینکه چشمانم مرا فریب نداده‌اند،  و آرام و مهار کردن قوه‌ی تخیلم برای نگاه مجددِ هوشیارتر و دقیق‌تری بود. چند دقیقه بعد، دوباره چشمانم را به آن نقاشی دوختم.

در آن چه که اکنون می‌دیدم نمی‌توانستم شکی داشته باشم، در حقیقت شکی هم نداشتم؛ چون به محض تابیدن اولین پرتوهای شمع بر آن بوم، سستی و بلاهتی که حواسم را مختل کرده بود از هم پاشید و ناگهان، مرا وحشت‌زده از خواب غفلت بیدار کرد.

همانطور که پیش از این گفتم، آن نقاشی، پرتره‌ای از دختر جوانی بود. فقط سر و شانه‌های او به سبک ژرفانمایی و شبیه به پرتره‌های توماس سالی[۴] کشیده شده بود. بازوها، سینه و حتی پایین موهای درخشانش به تدریج در سایه‌ی تیره و عمیقی در پس‌زمینه‌ی تابلو محو شده بود. قاب آن بیضی شکل و مزین به اسلیمی‌های طلاکاری شده‌ای بود؛ البته به عنوان یک اثر هنری، فقط خود آن نقاشی قابل‌تحسین بود. اما این اجرای آن نقاشی یا زیبایی جاودان آن چهره نبود که مرا آنطور ناگهانی و شدید تکان داد. آیا امکان داشت که بر اثر خواب‌آلودگی، خیال کرده باشم که آن چهره، زنده است؟ به سرعت حواسم را معطوف ویژگی‌های طرح، ژرف‌نمایی و قابِ آن کردم تا این ایده‌ را، حتی برای سرگرمی لحظه‌ای‌اش از سرم بیرون کنم. در حالی که عمیقاً به این نکات فکر می‌کردم، شاید برای یک ساعت، خیره به آن نقاشی، در همان حال نیمه دراز کشیده، نیمه نشسته، باقی ماندم. پس از گذشت مدتی طولانی، راضی از کشف راز حقیقی اثر آن نقاشی، به درون تخت برگشتم. طلسم نقاشی در این بود که آن چهره، در حالی که گویی حالتی زنده داشت به تصویر کشیده شده بود و همین حالتِ زنده بودن آن در ابتدا مرا وحشت‌زده و گیج کرده بود. با احترام و شگفتی عمیقی، شمعدان را به جای قبلی‌اش بازگرداندم. حال که عامل اصلی تحریکم از جلوی چشمم دور شده بود، مشتاقانه به دنبال کتابی گشتم که درباره‌ی آن نقاشی‌ها و تاریخچه‌شان توضیح داده بود. به دنبال عددی گشتم که مطابق با نقاشی در قاب بیضی شکل بود و این کلمات مبهم و عجیب و غریب را درباره‌ی آن خواندم:

«آن دختر، صاحب نادرترین نوعِ زیبایی، سرشار از زندگی و بسیار دوست‌داشتنی بود. زمانی که نقاش این نقاشی را ملاقات کرد، عاشقش شد و با او ازدواج کرد بخت از او روی گرداند. آن نقاش که پرشور، مشتاق و سخت‌کوش بود، حال صاحب عروسی در هنرش شده بود؛ عروس که صاحب نادرترین نوع زیبایی، سرشار از زندگی، بسیار دوست‌داشتنی، سرشار از نور و لبخند و همچون بچه آهویی شادمان بود، همه چیز را دوست و آنها را گرامی می‌داشت؛ فقط از هنر که رقیب او به شمار می‌آمد، متنفر بود. فقط از پالت، قلموها و باقی ابزارهای ناخوشایند نقاش بدش می‌آمد، چون او را از دیدار معشوقش محروم می‌کردند. بنابراین شنیدن این که نقاش می‌خواست او را به تصویر بکشد، برایش بسیار وحشتناک بود. اما او سربه زیر و مطیع بود و هفته‌ها فرمانبردارانه در تاریکی، در اتاق برجکی نشست که در آن نور فقط از بالای سرشان بر بوم سفید می‌افتاد. نقاش به کار خود که انجامِ آن ساعت‌ها و روزها به طول می‌انجامید افتخار می‌کرد. او که مردی پرشور، رام‌نشدنی و ترشرو بود، در خیالاتش گم شده بود، به طوری که متوجه نبود نوری که به شکل خوفناکی بر آن برج یکه و تنها افتاده است، نشان‌دهنده‌ی به یغما رفتن سلامتی و روح عروسش است. این مسئله همه را جز آن نقاش به شدت عذاب می‌داد. با این حال عروس، بدون آنکه شکایتی بکند، همچنان به لبخند زدن ادامه می‌داد، چون می‌دید که نقاش (که شهرت زیادی داشت) با اشتیاق، از کار خود به شدت لذت می‌برد و روزها و شب‌ها را صرف به تصویر کشیدن او کرده بود، اویی که به شدت عاشق نقاش بود. اما عروس هر روز ضعیف‌تر و بی‌روحیه‌تر می‌شد. بعضی از کسانی که شاهد آن نقاشی بودند از شباهت کم‌نظیرش با عروس، به عنوان یک شگفتی قدرتمند و مدرکی دال بر نه فقط قدرت نقاش، بلکه عشق عمیقش نسبت به عروس سخن می‌گفتند و بر این باور بودند که نقاش به خاطر این عشق بود که به این خوبی توانسته بود عروسش را به تصویر بکشد. مدت‌های زیادی گذشت و زمانی که کار داشت تمام می‌شد، نقاش دیگر به کسی اجازه‌ی ورود به برجک را نمی‌داد، چون که او در تب و تاب کارش بسیار وحشی شده بود و چشمانش را حتی لحظه‌ای هم برای نگاهی انداختن به همسرش از روی بوم برنمی‌داشت. او نمی‌دید رنگ‌هایی که روی بوم کشیده است، مدت‌هاست از روی گونه‌های زنی که روبه‌روی او نشسته بود رنگ باخته است.  بعد از گذشت هفته‌ها، زمانی که فقط چند کار کوچک باقی مانده بود، قلمو را به نرمی روی لبانش و سایه‌روشنی را در پسِ چشمانش کشید، و با این کار دوباره روح آن زن همچون شعله‌ای در جاشمعی جان گرفت. پس از آن، نقاش قلمو و رنگ را کنار گذاشت و برای یک لحظه، درحالی که از خوب بی خود شده بود، با شیفتگی در برابر کارش ایستاد. لحظه‌ای بعد، درحالی که هنوز خیره به نقاشی‌اش بود بیمناک، رنگ‌پریده و مبهوت شد و با صدای بلندی فریاد زد: «بدون شک این، خودِ زندگی‌ست!» ناگهان روی برگرداند تا نگاهی به عروسش بیاندازد: او مُرده بود!

    I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
    The reason I ask is because your design and style seems

    get people to click. You might try adding a video or a pic or two to grab people interested
    about everything’ve written. In my opinion, it could make your website a little livelier.
